I moved to Florida from Texas as an immigrant, a transplant, and a mother trying to put down roots (again) in a place I didn’t yet know.
What I’ve learned is that belonging doesn’t come from how long you’ve lived somewhere. It comes from how deeply you are willing to know it.
Our StoryA few years ago, we took a family trip to Washington State. Beautiful place. And at some point on that trip - watching my kids light up over tide pools and old-growth forest - it hit me like a quiet thunderclap.
I had flown across the country to give my children this experience. And I lived in Florida.
I came home and made a commitment: I was going to know this place. Really know it - not the theme parks, not the beaches everyone already knows about, but the cypress swamps and the seagrass flats and the pine flat woods that most people drive past every single day.
I was going to give my children the gift of a place they could genuinely call theirs.
Florida is one of the most extraordinary places on earth.
Most of us just need someone to point it out to us and say: Look.
You don’t have to be outdoorsy.
You just have to be curious.

Some of us are transplants. Some of us are immigrants. Some of us have lived here our whole lives and somewhere along the way we stopped actually seeing it.
It doesn’t matter how you got here or how long you’ve been here. What matters is deciding - on purpose - to let yourself fall in love with this place.
That decision is available to all of us, on any day we choose it.
